You say “Appeasement ‘94”
forgive my ignorance, but what was the alternative?
What should Clinton have done?
For starters, not opened the US, South Korean and Japanese treasuries to buy Kim off. We had never done that before—it was an unprecedented action, and Kim absorbed its lesson all too tell. He has known from that moment on that all he has to do is make enough noise and the aid will flow his way.
Second, at that point he didn’t have any nukes to wave at us. A joint US-SK-Japan military exercise would probably have sufficed to back him down a notch, and if that didn’t work a pre-emptive strike on his nuke plants would have been justified. Our stealth aircraft could have made quick work of any front-line troops Kim had ready to shell Seoul.
In ‘94 we had the strategic advantage. Now we don’t. Clinton gave Kim time to keep his nuke programs going, which we know for a fact he did. We also know for a fact that the Clinton Administration knew this, but did nothing about it.
And just as Clinton’s commitment to a non-military solution then gave the psychotic NorKs time to build their nuclear weapons and very likely doomed tens of thousands of S. Koreans, so now France, Germany and American peaceniks have succeeded in giving al Qaeda and Saddam the time they needed to plot another succesful attack on America. We’ll have to remember to thank them all when another several thousand Americans have been slaughtered by terrorists.
Thanks to Clinton they can hit us from Pyongyang out here in Seattle. Though we failed as a country to properly impeach him, how about having him shot for treason?
