TREASON IN ITHACA AMERICA?

Read it and weep -- for America, not Iraq.

“Brothers and sisters in the Military: Refuse to Fight, Refuse to Kill. You are being ordered to war by a President who was never elected...You are being ordered to war by a nation whose self-acknowledged posture is that of world domination, mastery, and control....We bring our plea to you, sisters and brothers, in the armed forces. Refuse to kill. Refuse the order to go to war. Leave the military before it is too late...If you choose to leave the military, please know that our homes are open to you.”

The [Ithaca, NY] Catholics who signed this statement acknowledge that their actions are in violation of federal law: “We knowingly and willingly make this plea to you in violation of 18 United States Code (USC) Sec. 1381 and 2387.”

18 USC Section 1381 involves “enticing desertion and harboring deserters” and 18 USC Section 2387 pertains to those who “interfere with, impair, or influence the loyalty, morale, or discipline of the military or naval forces of the United States.”

Violation of Section 1381 entails “fines under this title or imprisoned not more than three years, or both.” Those that violate Section 2387 “shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than ten years, or both, and shall be ineligible for employment by the United States or any department or agency thereof, for the five years next following his conviction.”

Mr President, your oath of office is still calling you. Time to grab Ashcroft by the collar and fight on behalf of your troops in battle. The men under your command are being urged to kill their officers -- and some are now following through -- during a war. Wake up and smell the gunpowder, gasoline and anarchy. Listen to what the radical American street is saying, because it's clear you're next on their hit list. Stop counting the political cost of a crackdown on illegal speech. This is absolutely not the type of speech our soldiers are fighting for. A Second Front in the war has been opened up, but the battle has only been joined with half-measures:

It took the anti-Vietnam movement five years to reach the levels of these anti-American demonstrations and another two to initiate real violence. When that line was crossed, there were more than a thousand domestic bombings, and at least one terrorist cult was launched. The current movement is potentially far more dangerous. Unlike its anti-Vietnam predecessor, it is allied with terrorist solidarity groups and radical Muslim organizations active on college campuses. This increases the likelihood that its violent tendencies will intensify as the war against terror abroad continues. The prospect that it will develop its own terrorist offshoots is real.

Unlike the anti-Vietnam efforts, the current movement is driven almost entirely by hate for American institutions policies and purposes...In its core, the left has always been a nihilistic and reactionary revolt against the modern world (capitalism, individualism, liberty), which is why it can ally itself so easily now with Islamo-fascists.

This means that the present leftist revival will not be deterred by an American victory in the current war. Its ranks are likely to grow and its tactics become more radical as the general war on terror proceeds

UPDATE: I used the title of the first article, Treason in Ithaca, for the headline, but it does deserve a question mark. Whether treason or sedition, neither should be considered outdated laws like sodomy or whatever. One could easily get the impression that's what they are to the Justice Dept. We need to charge people that we can fit into each category and let them mount a defense. "Treason Lite" is one option for America's domestic enemies.

I’m sorry, but your generalizations towards the anti-war movement, calling the left nihilistic hemogonists against liberties, shows how little you’ve looked into this issue, and exposes how narrow your views are. I attend a college which has staged anti-war protests, all of which have been peaceful (what a radical concept), and claiming that disagreance with American policies translates into a risk for terror which should be feared and dealt with as you’re eluding to is as far as I’m concerned about as anti-American as you can get. Who here is against liberty? Those speaking, or those trying to silence them? Liberty and democracy come with a heavy burden… tollerance. I applaud your vision of a liberated world, but i doubt you’re ready for it.

The Ithaca catholics are committing no less a crime than treason in time of war. Furthermore, all protesters who go out and stage parades are giving comfort and emotional support to Hussein and will have the blood of countless Marines on their hands - those that will fall because Hussein and his generals are still clinging to the idea that dead Marines will break our resolve. When the fighting starts, the protests end. The only outcome can be victory.

Andrew obviously didn’t comprehend what he was reading. What the Ithaca Catholics are doing isn’t mere disagreement. What the “protestors” with the “Shoot your officers” sign were doing wasn’t mere disagreement.

There is a line beyond which mere disagreement does not cross. These people have crossed it, and if Andrew doesn’t know where the line is, I sincerely hope he finds out before he, too, crosses it.

I’d like to know which college Andrew attends so that I don’t send my kids there. Not only does he fail “reading for comprehension”, but his mastery of the English language and his sentence construction is pitiful. “Disagreance”? How about “diagreement”? “Tollerance”? How about “tolerance”?

As far as his denial about the makeup of the anti-war movement being comprised of socialists, islamists, anti-capitalists, anarchists, etc. I feel that Andrew needs to do a little more reading and research into the roots and funding of this movement. The facts are out there if you choose to look. Those who seek truth do not need to hide behind words like tolerance. If your movement celebrates soldiers who frag their own commanders then you are morally bankrupt and I have no requirement to tolerate you.

I’m almost tempted to repeat the Pogo line, “We have seen the enemy …” The only way we (the US) can lose is by beating ourselves. Saddam is probably squeezing out a chuckle or two (if he is physically able!) when the knuckle-head “peace” protesters use violent tactics. Seems like some of the liberals’ true colors are starting to show.

Treason? I don’t think so. Sedition? Absolutely.

Attending college is a great fig leaf for committing mischief. And as Andrew demonstrates, it’s no guarantee of being literate - which should include the difference between “eluding” and “alluding”.

I think ELC is on the right track.

I know treason is hard to prove, but some people seem to be going over the line and adhering to, or providing aid and comfort to the enemy. Sabotage might be considered waging war. That grenade attack would definitely fall under the waging war against U.S. category — if you look at the motive, planning and tactics the soldier apparently used — cutting the lights first, attacking the command structure, and shooting survivors after the blast.

Then again, even Johnny Taliban didn’t face treason charges. Whatever charges are brought, something needs to be done.

I might settle for “Treason Lite”
