THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES, MR POWELL

I think this excellent summary of Colin Powell's recent teflon-coated career shows a real lack of leadership qualities beyond the integrity and charisma that make him so popular in the 90's. That would still double Bill Clinton's count of leadership qualities, but it's stunning for a man who is actually supposed to be a great leader. Additional aspects of leadership like vision, initiative, and bold risk-taking that everyone sees thoroughly permeating George Bush's entire being are missing in Powell. He could have easily led a revolution in the State Dept. as Rumsfeld did in the Pentagon. Instead, he became just another weak follower of the status quo, and a rusty cog in the machine -- except when prodded by his boss to help out.

It almost seems like Sept 11 was just another date to rip off the wall calendar in the State Dept. Powell didn't step up to the plate and show us what he was made of. Or, if he did, and I missed it, then he and the rest of his team simply struck out. Neither conclusion is good for his legacy. Most of us would have eagerly voted for him if he ran for President in 96 just based on trust and reputation. His window of opportunity has closed on that though. Those days when we elected charismatic followers will not return for a while.

Bush should really think about appointing a new Secretary of State in 2004. Maybe Condoleeza Rice. Someone who better understands the modern world should be our chief diplomat. If she's willing and able to make a difference and can stop the State Dept. from undermining America's interests, Condi would put Madeline Albright to shame, and be a better alternative to Powell. From what I hear, she's the whole package when it comes to leadership strength -- just like her boss. A few years at State and we would have a better idea about her as a Presidential candidate for 2008.

Imagine Hillary's rage if she has to run against a smart, likeable, black Republican female leader. Did I mention Condi's very feminine, yet tough too? In other words, a real woman America could elect President. It would further expose Democrat Party leaders as frauds who have lied about the GOP for a living. The DNC and Hillary would insist that Bill Clinton counted as their black president, arguing that black voters should be satisfied and not defect to the GOP. And they would conversely call Condi a white racist in black skin who doesn't really count. It would be the final nail in their political coffin. I have a feeling Hillary might be caught screaming more than her usual "f---ing Jew Bastard!" slurs behind the scenes as she goes down to defeat. She'd probably sound more like Bill and Roger Clinton before saying:

Ohhh! You cursed brat! Look what you've done! I'm melting! Melting! Oh, what a world! What a world! Who would have thought a good little girl like you could destroy my beautiful wickedness? Ohhh! Look out! Look out! I'm going. Ohhh...Ohhhhh!

UPDATE:

Just saw saw George Will wrote his latest column on African American Inroads for the GOP.

It looks like Hillary may still be thinking of avoiding an unknown 2008 nightmare and allowing herself to be "drafted" for 2004 against Bush. She just launched a trial baloon in the form of her "long-awaited" book. This is what Al Gore did. The books failed to sell and he dropped out of the race. Pray for rain to melt her sales. Otherwise, as mentioned in the comments, Bush w/Rice as VP in 2004 would be the perfect response if Cheney wants to retire.

Assuming that Cheney will decide not to push his luck regarding his heart condition any more for 2004, I’ve got a better job in mind for Condi Rice: VP candidate. It’s not like Vice Presidents have that much in the way of demanding job duties—she could do the same job she has now, though there would probably be a figurehead NSA appointed to replace her. Plus, imagine the effect on the blood pressure of the Senate Democrats when they look up and see Condi Rice sitting in Al Gore’s old seat for a close vote in the Senate. Warms my heart, it does. It would also set her up perfectly for your scenario, running for the big chair in 2008. I’d say this is pretty high on Terry McAuliffe’s list of nightmare scenarios, particularly given all of the antics from Reverend Al and his buddies that such a candidacy would provoke.

Great suggestion. Then who would clean up the State Dept?

Posted by Chris R. on April 28, 2003 6:20 AM

Why not move Rumsfeld to State and promote Wolfowitz at Defence?

Posted by Gramps on April 28, 2003 10:30 AM

Gramps is right, Rummy at State, Wolfie at Defense, if Powell resigns after the election. Condi is presidential material in 2008, Chris Regan is right, Hillary would be prevented from all the enormous vengeance she has in mind for those idiot Americans.

No way Rummy moves, he’s perfectly positioned right now.

…and why change anything for that matter? Powell has been getting a bad wrap lately. What people seem to not understand is that just because the U.N. failed, doesn’t mean that Colin Powell failed as well. He lead the U.S. to go to that international body. It was the right choice. The U.N. failed its test, and is now invalid… and I’m glad to know it as a proven fact.

Had we not gone, Bush’s administration would be no better than the fools that lined up with Mrs. and Mr. Hilary Clinton.

And speaking of the Clintons, what’s with the “Bill Clinton counted as their black president.” The DNC has never claimed such a thing, and I’d like to know why you are, Chris?

Alex,

Good point that the French, etc. certainly screwed Powell over and it’s the UN that looks worse. But, understand that Powell is the “head coach” of our diplomatic team. Bush is the current owner determined to instill some discipline at State and he must hire a new coach for next season to have that effect.

As for the Dems embracing Toni Morrison’s well-known nickname for Clinton as the “first black president,” I think it becomes not endearing, but disgusting when embraced by white Democrats (an office in Harlem was not an accident). There’s an unstated message in doing so that is meant to make a point to black Democrats: “There, you see? You don’t need a real black to be president. Stay at the back of the bus and watch us drive the party the same way you would if we allowed you to.”

National Democrat political strategy is so notoriously racist toward black candidates, I’m almost embarrassed for them. That was my sarcastic yet serious point in imagining their venomous reaction to Condi Rice or any other GOP “black threat.”

The real party that will break down racial barriers and stereotypes in America is the GOP. Bush has shown that most recently with his appointment of Powell, Rice, etc. Neither are tokens, it’s just that Powell doesn’t measure up that particular job. Until I see otherwise, Condi probably deserves to be the first black and female to be president. I’m saying that as a Alan Keyes fan too. Maybe he can then run the State Dept.

He said: “The DNC and Hillary would insist that Bill Clinton counted as their black president, arguing that black voters should be satisfied and not defect to the GOP.”

The word was WOULD, not DID.

Bomb-a-rama, I read the post clearly and understood the word WOULD perfectly. I think Chris completely understood the motivation behind my comment and drew out the perfect eloquent response that needs to be included for clarity.

It is disgusting when the Dems try to mark Clinton as “the first black president” and I don’t want anyone to believe for a moment that opinion gets the support of Chris, Junkyard, or Dems in general.

Side note, love this blog. You should check me out at http://12thman.blogspot.com when you get a chance to read my views. I don’t get to blog much during the day anymore, but try to make up for it at night.

While I think Rice as VP is a great idea I think unfortunetly it will never happen. The Bush family and inner circle refuse to replace Cheney b/c the idea of Jeb running in 2008 has been holding their attention. By replacing Cheney with Rice (or Guiliani who has been actively lobbying for the job since Nov.) there would be an heir apparent that would get in Jeb’s way. Is this a boneheaded idea? Sure is. Is it going to change anytime soon? Unfortunetly not, and the GOP will suffer for it in the long term.

Bruce,

I hope you are wrong but believe you are right.

…good stuff.

Yeah, I forgot about that Bruce. Sorry Condi. But hey, that means we can put her back at the State Dept.
