Not CCM per se, but how about recent Spock’s Beard (with Neal Morse at the helm) and Neal’s solo stuff?
The only CCM I am intimately familiar with is Keith Green. That shows just how far out of the mainstream I am. The CCM mainstream that is.
Remember when music used to be something you could actually listen too?
Keith Green… his music sounds a little dated but some of his lyrics are still as sharp as they ever were. “Asleep In the Light” is still in my personal top ten. CCM and secular music both share one thing in common (IMNSHO) you’ll have to sort through a lot of trash to find the treasure.
One of my favourites is “No one believes in me anymore” which is sung from the devil’s perspective. A timeless amsterpiece.
You’re right, there’s a lot of trash out there, but if I’m feeling down I just fire up some Platters music and remember a time when people knew how to sing.
Keith Green was phenomonal. How many other CCM artists’ work will outlast them by going on 20 years? Not many. I should have added Michael Card to my short list of great CCM artists.
Spock’s Beard? Never heard of them, but the name is a hoot. I’ll check them out.
RE: Spock’s… They were/are primarily a secular prog band. Their principle writer/singer/keyboardist, Neal Morse became a Christian a few years back and his faith started surfacing in his writing, much as Kerry Livgren’s did in his last few Kansas albums. The rest of the Spock’s guys are not Christians, and Neal recently went solo. He’s supposed to have a new project out later this year.
I see the assertion that CCM is generally no good every now and then and I just don’t get it. You just have to know where to find the good music. For instance, grassrootsmusic.com
