My information about habitat for humanity is about twelve years old, but I imagine its worse now, not better, so here goes:
Jimmy Carter is famous for trying to reahabilitate his tarnished image by building houses and giving them to the indigent. Visit their website, and look at the list of people falling all over themselves to donate building materials and labor to H for H.
Despite getting the materials for a house for free, and getting cheap or free land to build it on, and getting free volunteer labor, twelve years ago their own figures showed that the houses cost $50.00 per square foot to build.
I was one of those rapacious developers people like Carter like to inveigh against. Well, I built a house the same year for fifty dollars per square foot, with no help from anyone. I paid wages. I employed subcontractors. I purchased my materials. Who did more to help more people?
Someone really should look into that “Charity” I suspect you’ll find lots of administrators making enormous salaries they could never command outside of government or “charity,” and lots of money spread around for political agitation, and very little getting to the end of the charity alimentary canal where the house ends up.
