LOST

Other than the NFL, there is only one television event I've been waiting months to see--the return of Lost. It returned tonight, and delivered a great hour of suspense, thrills and shocks.

Did I guess that someone was living at the bottom of the shaft? No, I did not.

Did I guess that Jack would know that person? Nope.

Do I have any idea why Shannon saw Walt dripping wet in the middle of the forest, when he was supposed to have been captured by those spooky boat people at the end of last season? Nope.

And where's Kate? She has to be in that strange underground world beneath the hatch, but where?

Lost is the most baffling show on TV, but it's also the best. The cast is perfect, the editing and visuals are as good as any Hollywood feature, and the story line, supposing it's actually going somewhere, is wildly unpredictable.

If you have any Lost speculations or conjectures, share them. Why did Locke know that the black cloud thingy wouldn't kill him? I just want to know.

Hmmm.

I sure hope this isn’t a reprise of Twin Peaks where the producers are essentially making it up each episode.

I have read that the writers and producers have the show planned out for the next five or six years, so they definitely know where they are going.

Last night’s episode had me totally confused.

Walt freaked me out doing his whisper thing. I don’t know what the “others” have done to him, but from that image of him soaking wet, it can’t be good.

The guy Jack knew from his past living in the hatch came out of left field. Never would have seen that coming in a million years.

All in all it was one of the best hours and 10 minutes of television I’ve seen since this show went into hiatus last year.

Dude!!! Spoilers!! C’mon you gotta give some kind of warning for those that haven’t watched it yet. ;)

You have got to be kidding. This melodrama is on ABC. Lots of commmercials. Poor acting. It is an evening soap opera on an island. Four good reasons to avoid it at all costs.

…what I want to know is about those numbers…some kind of combination to the Underverse? :) I think it was all some kind of cold-war experiment gone awry…they let something in and it’s inhabiting the island.…just check out that old pre-DOS box with the command prompt and the tape drives…loved it…’we’re gonna have a Locke problem’ :)

Locke himself explained - because he’s a man of faith. No matter what his choices, his fate is predetermined. He and a few others, like the fat guy, know that their presence on that island is no coincidence. God has some plan for them and it ain’t to kill them, because …

Speculation: … they are all already dead. They are in Purgatory because they all had “issues” that were left unresolved and until they are, their after-life’s final destination remains undetermined.

BTW - Have you seen HBO’s “Rome”?

Posted by Doug Purdie on September 22, 2005 12:15 PM

I don’t get the effusions for LOST, but that’s just me.

I caught up with ROME while in a motel with HBO. Sword and sandals sex opera with very modern undertones in dialogue. The centurion decides he needs to be more sensitive to his unfaithful wife because he prefers love to obedience.

The Senate and Caesar stuff is okay, though, and the sets, costumes et al are first rate.

Still a pretty silly way to try and get a little history lesson between the rutting.

Lost is not a soap opera. I don’t know what it is, but it’s not that.

I’ve heard the Purgatory theories but I don’t buy them. Can’t say why. They just don’t work for me.

One thing I’ve noticed that I haven’t seen anyone else comment on is the idea of symmetry. There seems to be a symmetrical nature to the way the characters live and die and behave. Two instances—first, the death of Boone and the birth of the baby happening on the same night. Second, the Korean couple splitting at the same time Shannon and Saed become an item. The editing made the connection between these events very obvious. Here’s another I just thought of. Sawyer’s awful reputation got rehabilitated a bit at the same time that Kate’s was destroyed. There are probably others, such as Sarah losing her fiancee on the same day that she meets Jack, whom she later marries. There’s a “Lord giveth and taketh away” vibe going on here. I have no idea what it means, but it’s interesting.

Ok, looks like somebody needs a lesson in SPOILER WARNINGS.

The thing about last night’s show is that spoilers don’t matter because I have no idea where the story is going. Even though I watched it I’m not sure I know more than I would have if I hadn’t. It’s weird that way. Watching it gives you enough knowledge to be even more baffled than you would be if you hadn’t. For instance, I know what’s locked in the hatch, but have no idea why, for how long, or who Desmond is, or what happened to Kate, etc etc. One answer brings up half a dozen new questions. How can you spoil that?

And anyway, it was on last night. It’s not like I’m slipping hints from something that hasn’t aired yet. How is anyone supposed to talk about it without getting into some detail about what happened? If you missed it, sorry, but that’s your problem.

I’m glad you have so many left over brain cells to get wrapped up in the multiple meanings of this thing. I looked at it for about twenty minutes and felt I must find something more productive to do. ABC has another coming out you all might like called Commander in Chief. In it an aging Gena Davis looks for Madonna in Tom Hanks’ spacesuit. Then they all fly over the White House and are shot down by an missile fired by a patriotic muslim. They land on top of a truck going down Rt. 95 and are taken to an island off the Georgia coast where Jimmah Carter puts the pieces together to make a new wife (he is tired of Roselyn). It gets really interesting after that.

Commander in Chief is going to be tripe. It’s a big ad for Hillary. Everybody knows that.

So what’s up with the hostility in your post, David? If you don’t like Lost, don’t read about it. But don’t take swings at me for no good reason. That’s just being a jerk.

There’s no hostility in my post that I am aware of. Just a little stream of consciousness that I thought (pardon me) was amusing. Sorry you were offended.

Actually, now that I think of it, I do feel a certain amount of anger towards ABC (NBC and CBS also). I wonder why? I hardly ever look at anything on them. If I do it feels like buying the NYTimes or the WaPo. It feels like sending money to the enemy. I want sponsors to know that I might not buy there product because they advertised on these stations. Remember the product boycott over Rathergate? It’s still going on in my head. So, it’s nothing personal. Enjoy whatever turns you on. I’m just trying to be consistent.

Several people have apparently recorded what Walt was saying. Playing it backwards, they have heard, “Don’t push the button. The button is bad,” or something very similar to that.

Does anyone think that maybe Sarah was somehow cured by the mysterious Irish man(if that is what he is)? He was talking about believing in miracles and knew right away that Jack was upset about a female patient. Also, what is up with that stuff he was injecting?
