THE ROBERTS HEARINGS

As you probably already know, the confirmation hearings for SCOTUS Chief Justice nominee John Roberts kicked off yesterday. Unsurprisingly, the ACLU has unleashed its furrowed brow and deployed it against Judge Roberts. The ACLU is apparently troubled by evidence of pro-life leanings in Roberts' decisions. It is also probably troubled by the fact that Roberts isn't likely to side with their radical positions very often. The ACLU is urging that Democrat senators dig very deeply into Roberts' record, where they seem to expect to find evidence of cannibalism or a similarly eggregious offense.

No, wait. The ACLU would probably defend cannibalism as a basic civil right. Perhaps then the ACLU is looking for signs that Roberts is an originalist. Such a basic adherence to the plain language of the Constitution would be enough to put the ACLU on red alert.

I think if there are any records to be deeply inspected, they sit in the ACLU's various headquarters. Someone has to foot the bill for all of the union's work on behalf of incarcerated al Qaeda terrorists. Who?

MORE: Why do I get the impression that WaPo reporter Dana Milbank was thoroughly unimpressed with the senators quizzing Roberts yesterday?
