Redefining where life begins
Geoff sends along this story, and it's just so radical I'm speechless:
The Colorado Supreme Court on Tuesday gave the go-ahead to proponents of a ballot initiative seeking to amend the state constitution in 2008 to define personhood as a fertilized egg.I think it's radical in the best possible way. There would be bother and complications resulting from this change, some of them serious, many of them superfluous dust kicked up by NARAL and Planned Parenthood...Opponents to the measure, which would lay the foundation to make abortion illegal in the state, challenged the ballot title as misleading to voters.
...
The amendment, if approved by voters, would extend constitutional protections from the moment of conception, guaranteeing every fertilized egg the right to life, liberty, equality of justice and due process of law.
But while acknowledging there are difficulties to be worked out (eg the right to use contraception announced in Griswold v. Connecticut) I would like to see this ballot initiative succeed.
